Things to Check on Your Roof After a Storm

    DraykeBy DraykeSeptember 12, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

After a big storm, it’s important to check on your roof to make sure there wasn’t any damage. If there was, you’ll need to take care of it as soon as possible to prevent further damage (to your home and your bank balance!). But what things do you need to check when assessing roof damage after a storm?

    Types of Damage

Before we offer some advice, storms can cause different types of damage to your roof. The most common type is wind damage, which can manifest as missing or damaged shingles. Wind can also loosen or tear off gutters and downspouts. Hail damage is also fairly common and can show up as dents or divots in metal roofs, or cracked or missing shingles.

Next, flooding is the least common type of damage but can be the most destructive. Flooding can cause serious leaks that lead to water damage in your home. It’s important to act fast if you think your roof has succumbed to flooding.

Of course, your roof could also be damaged by falling trees and other debris. If you live in an area with lots of trees, it’s a good idea to have your roof inspected after a storm.

Things to Check After a Storm

Roofing Material – First, check for any missing or damaged roofing material. This can include shingles, metal panels, and tiles. If you find any damage, it’s important to have it repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Gutters and Downspouts – Next, check your Arizona rain gutters and downspouts to make sure they’re clear of debris. Clogged gutters can cause water to back up and damage your roof.

Flashing – Flashing is the material that’s used to seal the gaps around vents, chimneys, and skylights. If the flashing is damaged, water can seep in and cause damage to your home. The more you allow water into your home, the greater the chance of mold and mildew growth.

Soffits and Fascia – The soffits are the vents located under the eaves of your roof; meanwhile, the fascia is the board that runs along the edge of your roof. Check these areas for any signs of damage and repair or replace them as needed.

Soil and Vegetation – After a storm, it’s not uncommon for soil and vegetation to be displaced. This can cause problems if the roots of trees or shrubs are growing too close to your home’s foundation. If you see any roots that are close to your foundation, have them removed immediately.

    Get a Professional Inspection

Naturally, you’re welcome to assess the damage to your roof on your own. However, it’s always best to get a professional inspection to ensure that all the damage is found and repaired. A professional roofing contractor will have the experience and expertise to find any damage that you might miss – not only this, but they also have the right equipment to carry out repairs safely.

While most homeowners focus on the roof itself, it’s easy to forget other important aspects…like the gutters. As noted, strong winds can dislodge debris and send it flying into your gutters. This can cause serious damage, including bent or broken gutters, as well as holes or cracks. If you don’t repair this damage, it can lead to water leaks and other serious problems. So, be sure to inspect your gutters after a storm and make any necessary repairs.
